DOrSU D-DAGTA project team benchmarks leading institutions on natural dye research
Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) researchers Dr. Gorjel E. Llanita, Dr. Donnell C. Cereno, Geralph Sam P. Villarubia, Desiree Joy D. Maxey, and Hayma T. Usman conducted a four-day benchmarking activity from September 21 to 24, 2026, at institutions with expertise in natural dye processing, laboratory research, fine arts, design, and conservation.
The activity formed part of the project Development of Dye as an Art Medium Generated from Natural Assets (D-DAGTA): A Regenerative Approach to Filipinnovation of Arts, which explores natural sources of bio-colorants for possible use as art media.
The team visited the University of the Philippines Cebu, University of Santo Tomas, National Museum of Fine Arts, and the DOST–Philippine Textile Research Institute.
The benchmarking centered on practices, techniques, and facilities that could help guide the project’s research direction, particularly in natural dye processing, laboratory work, fine arts, design, conservation, and textile research. The visits also allowed the team to explore possible areas for collaboration with the institutions.
The project is currently in its bioprospecting stage, with researchers continuing to examine potential natural sources of bio-colorants. Through the benchmarking activity, the D-DAGTA project is building a stronger research base for the development of natural dyes as art media while opening opportunities for collaboration across science, textile research, cultural institutions, and the creative sector.
