DOrSU kicks off SIGLAKAS 2026, sets sail for glory

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) kicked off its annual sports and cultural festival, SIGLAKAS 2026, on October 19 at the university’s Main Campus, drawing students from its different faculties and campuses for five days of competitions.
This year’s festival, themed “Set Sail for Glory,” opened with a parade of delegations, cultural performances, and the traditional lighting of the Friendship Flames, followed by a fireworks display.
In his message, University President Dr. Roy G. Ponce announced that the university gymnasium, which had been out of use for several years due to its deteriorating roof and flooring, has been rehabilitated and is now available for SIGLAKAS activities.
President Ponce further acknowledged Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go for his efforts in securing funding for the renovation, which forms part of the university’s efforts to improve its sports facilities.
He also shared the DOrSU’s preparations for upcoming intercollegiate sporting events and confirmed the University’s participation in the MASTS Friendship Games.
The opening program featured Saludo presentations from participating delegations, a Dagmay Ani cultural performance, and an exhibition by the DOrSU marching band.
Award-winning DOrSU delegates to the PASUC National Culture and Arts Festival and the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (NSCUAA) Meet led the lighting of the Friendship Flames, a tradition symbolizing sportsmanship and solidarity among participants.
President Ponce formally declared SIGLAKAS 2026 open before the fireworks display capped the ceremony.
The festival runs until October 23, with students competing in various sporting and cultural events.
