Emerging DOrSU Spatial Data Lab Wins Best Paper at InvENT 2025

A developing research initiative from Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) earned the Best Paper Award at the ATU-Net International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering, and Science Education (InvENT) 2025, held at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City, on July 23–24, 2025.
The winning paper, titled “Geospatial Data Visualization of Marine Plastic in Davao Gulf using Python-Data Driven OpenDrift Modeling,” explores how plastic waste from 39 rivers around the Davao Gulf drifts and accumulates in the sea across different seasons. Using data-driven simulations, the study identified seasonal drift patterns and high-risk zones, providing valuable insights for waste management interventions.
The project is funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with ADDVentures Innovation Center.
Led by Dr. Jonathan S. Cabrera, the research team includes Wilkin Simo, Cindy Lasco, Lanie Laureano, and Danver Palmiano.
“We are grateful to DOrSU President Roy Ponce and the university administration for the opportunity to present this study on an international platform,” said Dr. Cabrera.
InvENT 2025 was jointly organized by the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) and Universitas Brawijaya of Indonesia, gathering innovators and educators from across Asia to promote collaboration in science, technology, and entrepreneurship.
The recognition marks a milestone in DOrSU’s research development and its growing contribution to data-driven environmental solutions. (DOrSU PIO)
