Students of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) learned about the processes involved in the Educational Assistance Program (EAP) of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), as well as its broader peacebuilding context, during an orientation on August 17, 2026, at the DOrSU Academic Building.
Conducted in partnership with Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU GenSan), the orientation walked student beneficiaries through the EAP, from its purpose and implementation to the procedures for receiving the assistance.
Prof. Mussar A. Salamat, Peace Coordinator for Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu (ZamBaSul), discussed the program, explaining its key components and the processes involving student beneficiaries.
The discussion then moved beyond program requirements to the broader context in which the EAP operates. Assoc. Prof. Esmaida Andang-Alaiden facilitated Peace and Conflict 101, introducing participants to basic concepts of conflict and peacebuilding, while Dr. Jovar G. Pantao traced the history of peace and conflict in Mindanao and discussed efforts that have shaped the region’s continuing pursuit of peace.
Aver Omar also briefed the students on the payroll process, including the procedures for the release and receipt of their educational assistance.
By pairing the program orientation with discussions on Mindanao’s peace and conflict experience, the activity gave the students a clearer view of the EAP not only as a form of educational support, but as part of broader efforts to advance peace, inclusion, and development through education.
