DOrSU launches AI literacy initiative under ASEAN program

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) is advancing artificial intelligence (AI) literacy among students through a hybrid learning initiative aligned with regional efforts to promote the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies.
The activity, titled “From DOrSU to the World: Advancing Responsible AI for Every Tata (Tara, Ta! Let’s Talk AI),” was conducted on April 15, 2026, bringing together 3,917 students from the main and extension campuses through limited face-to-face participation and online platforms, including Zoom and Facebook Live. The activity aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of AI concepts and applications, promote the responsible and critical use of technology, and prepare learners to contribute to national development and global competitiveness. It also served as a platform to introduce participants to the AI Ready ASEAN Programme and encourage continued engagement through enrollment in the AI Class ASEAN platform.
The initiative is led by the university’s AI Ready Master Trainers—Dr. Lanie B. Laureano, Dr. Jonathan S. Cabrera, Mr. John Ray Paulin, Mr. Alan Karl Gatdula, and Mr. Dony Dongiapon, who are BSIT faculty members, in collaboration with student support offices and campus organizations. It is implemented in partnership with SmartCT under the AI Ready ASEAN Program, a regional initiative supported by the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org.
The activity responds to the increasing relevance of AI in education and everyday life. As digital technologies continue to reshape learning environments and professional landscapes, institutions are expanding efforts to ensure that students develop both technical knowledge and ethical awareness in using AI tools.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by higher education institutions in the Philippines to integrate AI education into academic programs, supporting the development of a future-ready and digitally competent workforce.
