DOrSU marks Labor Day with pickleball tournament for employees, stakeholders

Davao Oriental State University marked Labor Day on May 1 with a pickleball tournament for university employees, stakeholders, and local enthusiasts, shifting the holiday observance from the usual formal rites to recreation and friendly competition.
Dubbed “Clock Out, Kitchen In: Labor Day Court Shift Pickleball Tournament,” the activity drew more than 90 participants who competed under the Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate categories. Spectators also filled the sidelines, adding to the energy of the event and sharing in the fellowship between matches.
The tournament was organized by DOrSU’s Office of the President, Office of Human Resource and Development Services, Bachelor of Physical Education program, and Office of Student Sports and Wellness, with valuable support from the offices of Davao Oriental First District Representative Nelson “JR” Dayanghirang, Vice Governor Glenda Rabat-Gayta, City Mayor Joel Mayo Z. Almario, and Board Member Rotchie M. Ravelo, as well as Codilla Law Office and the DOrSU PickleNoobs Club.
The Labor Day tournament formed part of DOrSU’s broader efforts to promote employees’ health and wellness beyond the workplace. The university has sustained initiatives such as the weekly Zumba Dancercise and continues to provide access to its Health and Wellness Center, recreational areas, and sports facilities.
In the same vein, volleyball and basketball have long been part of campus recreation, drawing employees and students into regular physical activity and community play. As pickleball gains popularity in the City of Mati, DOrSU has also opened space for the sport to grow within the university community.
