DOrSU Advances Expertise in Soil Physics, Water Chemistry, and Rapid Soil Testing through BSWM Training
Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) marked progress in its commitment to advanced soil and water analysis, with faculty members Dr. Janeth C. Tayone and Mr. Geralph Sam P. Villarubia recently completing Weeks 2 and 3 of the Hands-On Training on Soil Physics, Water Chemistry, and Rapid Soil Testing. This intensive program, organized by the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) in Quezon City, Philippines, aligns with DOrSU’s ongoing initiatives to improve agricultural and environmental practices in the region.
The training, led by LSD Chief Ms. Maribel R. Jalalon under the guidance of BSWM Director Dr. Gina Parde-Nilo, took place over two phases. From October 14 to 18, 2024, participants focused on Soil Physics and Water Chemistry, gaining valuable insights into the mechanics of soil and water interaction essential for environmental management. The program then continued from October 21 to 25, 2024, with a specialized module on Rapid Soil Testing—an efficient technique for assessing soil health and fertility in real time.
Participants in this program included representatives from various Regional Soils Laboratories, the Sugar Regulatory Administration, Provincial Agriculture Offices, and State Universities and Colleges nationwide. The training aimed to strengthen skills in updated testing methodologies and procedures, fostering consistency in soil, water, plant tissue, and fertilizer testing across the country, as stipulated by Presidential Decree 1435. Furthermore, attendees earned Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units, aiding chemists and chemical technicians in the renewal of their PRC licenses.
In a significant enhancement to DOrSU’s analytical capabilities, the BSWM granted the university’s request for four essential equipment for soil and water analysis, along with six Soil Test Kits (STKs) specifically for rapid soil testing. This equipment will enable DOrSU to conduct more precise and comprehensive assessments, benefiting agricultural and environmental sustainability in the region.
The training completion by Dr. Tayone and Mr. Villarubia underscores DOrSU’s dedication to building regional expertise in soil and water management and its proactive approach to supporting local agricultural practices. (DOrSU PIO)
