DOrSU Holds First-Ever Research Colloquium and Best Research Competition for Graduate Students

Marking a milestone in its commitment to research excellence, the Faculty of Advanced and International Studies (FAIS) of Davao Oriental State University successfully held its first-ever Research Colloquium and Best Research Competition for graduate students today, May 14, 2025, at the DOrSU Graduate School Library.
Organized in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) and the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension (OVPRIE), the initiative aimed to recognize outstanding student research and to cultivate a strong research culture within the faculty. The competition featured two categories: the 3-Minute Research Competition, where participants summarized their thesis using one static slide in under three minutes for a general audience; and the Best Thesis Competition, where students presented their full research in 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session with a panel of expert judges. Serving as judges were Dr. Elsa May D. Baron, Dr. Mark Ronald Manseguiao, Dr. Arthelo P. Palma, and Dr. Nathan Ray Alim, who provided critical insights and constructive evaluation of the presentations.
Aligned with DOrSUโs advocacy for regenerative futuresโchampioned by University President Dr. Roy G. Ponceโthe research colloquium highlighted studies that address real-world challenges while promoting sustainability, equity, and innovation. The initiative underscored the universityโs commitment to nurturing scholarly work that not only generates new knowledge but also contributes to building resilient communities, preserving cultural heritage, and advancing inclusive development in the region.
In the 3-Minute Research Competition, Ms. Novilla R. Canalita, a Doctor of Education major in Educational Leadership and Management, emerged as the winner for her compelling and concise presentation. In the Best Research Competition, Mr. Ricksterlie C. Verzosa, a Doctor of Philosophy major in Environmental Science, was declared the FAIS Overall Winner. Best Research awards were also conferred per program: Ms. Novilla R. Canalita for Doctor of Education major in Educational Leadership and Management, Mr. Ricksterlie C. Verzosa for Doctor of Philosophy major in Environmental Science, Mr. Alemar B. Mapinogos for Master of Science Teaching major in Mathematics, Mr. Wendyl M. Aligato for Master of Science Teaching major in General Science, Mr. Nemore M. Lahoy for Master of Science in Environmental Science, and Mr. Ruel G. Campo for Master of Business Administration.
With its successful launch, the FAIS Research Colloquium and Best Research Competition is expected to become an annual platform for celebrating scholarly excellence and promoting research that matters. (DOrSU PIO)
