DOrSU President to Speak at the Third National Protected Area Conference
The President of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU), Dr. Roy G. Ponce, has been invited as a resource person at the Third National Protected Area Conference. The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Quezon City from June 25 to 27, 2024. This prestigious event gathers experts, stakeholders, and policymakers to discuss crucial aspects of protected area management, particularly climate change mitigation, adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.
The DOrSU President’s address will focus on “Partnership with the Academe: Experience in Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary/ASEAN Heritage Park.” This topic is particularly significant given the exemplary conservation work done at the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, which is not only an ASEAN Heritage Park but also a UNESCO World Site.
In his speech, the President will share insights and experiences on how DOrSU has partnered with various academic institutions, government agencies, and local communities to promote conservation and sustainable management of the sanctuary. He will highlight the importance of academic involvement in protected area management, showcasing how research, education, and community engagement have been pivotal in preserving the unique flora and fauna of Mt. Hamiguitan.
The conference will amplify the role of protected areas as vital components in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Protected areas like Mt. Hamiguitan serve as critical reservoirs of biodiversity and natural resources, helping to buffer against the impacts of climate change and providing essential ecosystem services.
Notable attendees at the conference include Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Hon. Alfredo D. Maranon III, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, and Hon. Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, DENR Secretary.
