UResCom-iMIDF secures PHP 10 Million Grant from DTI
UResCom-iMIDF has secured a PhP 10 million grant from DTI for the project titled “Establishment of MAterials DEvelopment and INnovations in DAVao Oriental Fabrication LABoratory (MADE IN DAVLAB): A Regenerative Path for Birthing Innovative Ideas”. The project was approved by the National Technical Working Group (NTWG) of the Department of Trade and Industry – Shared Service Facility (DTI-SSF) on June 7, 2024, via Zoom. The PHP 10 million project was presented by Dr. Wilanfranco C. Tayone and co-defended by Dr. Rod Ryan B. Mendoza (Project Leader) and Dr. Ivan L. Saligumba (Project Member). The state-of-the-art machinery will be housed at the Institute for Materials Innovation, Development, and Fabrication (i-MIDF), one of the six research institutes of the University Research Complex (UResCom).
This project is designed to meet the needs of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), business sectors, academia, government agencies, R&D institutions, innovators, researchers, students, hobbyists, and civic organizations. It will offer access to cutting-edge technologies, empowering them to transform ideas into prototypes and tangible solutions. This will serve as a central development center and innovation hub for generating innovative ideas through prototyping using local resources. The project will also attract talented student innovators and faculty researchers, fostering a culture of creativity and bridging the gap between academic and real-world applications.
The i-MIDF, as the lead research laboratory of UResCom, is poised to make a significant impact. By effectively utilizing recycled materials, agri-waste, plastics, and local natural resources, the laboratory will address societal challenges, including waste reduction, climate change, environmental degradation, health, and sustainable resources. Establishing a research innovation hub in the province has the potential to attract investors, generate employment opportunities, provide access to technology, and create alternative income, leading to countryside development.
MSME products often need help competing with other brands due to quality, appeal, desirability, and attractiveness issues. Common hurdles include design, packaging, labeling, marketing, branding, promotion, and updating. This project will level the playing field by establishing a local and readily accessible fabrication laboratory. The team will closely work with DTI-Davao Oriental and DTI-XI to ensure that the needs of MSMEs are met, making them an integral part of this initiative. (DOrSU PIO)
