DOrSU, RUPP of Cambodia Forge Stronger Ties Through Cross-Cultural Scriptwriting Workshop

The Bachelor of Science in Development Communication program of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) further advanced its internationalization efforts through a virtual lecture on “Scriptwriting in Multimedia Content,” featuring Cambodian media educator Prof. Bun Y. Ung, Director of the Department of Media and Communication at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), Cambodia.
Held on May 14, 2025, via Zoom, the event drew participation from over 70 students from the BS Development Communication and BS Biology programs, highlighting a shared interest in the narrative power of multimedia across disciplines.
Prof. Ung delivered an insightful and practical discussion on scriptwriting for documentary films, focusing on essential components such as character development, plot structuring, audience targeting, and message framing. Drawing from his experience in media education and practice, he emphasized the importance of crafting authentic, culturally resonant narratives that inspire reflection rather than persuasion.
“Documentary film is not intended to persuade the audience to take action on the problem of the story being narrated, but it is a platform to present real-life stories, where the audience themselves can reflect,” Prof. Ung explained.
To deepen the learning experience, he presented a short documentary film produced in Cambodia, sparking meaningful dialogue among participants about the transformative power of storytelling in representing social issues and fostering cultural understanding.
The event was also graced by the presence of Dr. Lilibeth S. Galvez, Director of the Global and International Relations Office; Mr. Mark Aljen D. Binocal, Director of the Center for Futures Thinking and Regenerative Development; and Mr. Arvin K. Costales, DevCom faculty member. Their attendance emphasized the university’s unwavering commitment to academic innovation, global engagement, and the development of future-ready communicators.
This collaboration between DOrSU and RUPP marks a significant step in promoting cross-cultural learning and expanding the creative and critical competencies of students and faculty alike. It also reflects a broader vision of leveraging media and communication as tools for social transformation, rooted in shared values across Southeast Asia. (Article by Melrene Isabel Morales)
