Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) took a proactive stance in promoting health and well-being among its constituents through an HIV awareness campaign, testing, and counseling held at DOrSU’s Student Center on February 14, 2014, in time for the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
Dubbed “Love Your Health,” the tri-purpose event was organized by various offices within DOrSU, including the University Student Council, Health and Wellness Services Office, and Gender Research and Resource Center, in collaboration with external partners such as the Kindling Acceptance and Leading Advocates of Societal Awareness and Guidance (KALASAG) Organization, the City Health Office of Mati, Davao Oriental Provincial Health Office, and Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. It aimed to raise awareness about HIV while providing essential testing and support services.
KALASAG Coordinator, Mr. Cymon James Barbas, delivered a compelling message emphasizing the urgency of combating HIV-related stigma and stereotypes. He facilitated discussions on the symptoms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS, shedding light on their physical and psychological effects. Encouraging self-awareness and proactive health management, he urged attendees to prioritize their health and well-being.
Central to the event was the provision of free HIV testing and counseling services, administered by healthcare professionals. Participants had the opportunity to undergo testing and receive personalized counseling sessions, where they could address any concerns or queries they may have had regarding their health.
DOrSU has always been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS initiatives, implementing a variety of programs to promote awareness, prevention, and support within its community and beyond. These efforts include educational campaigns and seminars aimed at providing comprehensive information about HIV/AIDS to students, faculty, and staff, with a focus on prevention, early detection, and de-stigmatization. Additionally, DOrSU collaborates with government agencies, healthcare organizations, and advocacy groups to broaden its impact in addressing HIV/AIDS-related issues.
Aligned with its mission of advancing regenerative societies, DOrSU recognizes the vital link between health, sustainability, and societal well-being. Healthy individuals are better equipped to actively contribute to their communities and participate in social, economic, and environmental initiatives. By leading HIV awareness and support initiatives, DOrSU fosters a culture of health consciousness, bolstering community resilience and sustainability. Through these efforts, DOrSU empowers individuals to make informed health choices, promotes inclusivity and compassion, and nurtures a supportive environment conducive to overall well-being, in harmony with the vision of regenerative societies.
