Two new weevil species from Mindanao and Panay islands have been introduced to science – ππ¦π΅π’π±π°π€πΊπ³π΅πΆπ΄ (ππ³π΅π©π°π€πΊπ³π΅πΆπ΄) π²πΆπ’π₯π³π’π΅πΆπ΄ and ππ¦π΅π’π±π°π€πΊπ³π΅πΆπ΄ (ππ¦π΅π’π±π°π€πΊπ³π΅πΆπ΄) πͺππ¨π’π΄.

The name of the first new species is from the Latin word βquadratusβ referring to its prominent square scaly markings in the pronotum and the elytra. The second species is named after the beetle research center of Daugavpils University in appreciation for the successful cooperation which led to the discovery of this new species.

Dr. Analyn A. Cabras, Mr. Jhonnel P. Villegas, and Dr. Milton Norman D. Medina described the said species in a paper titled “Two new species of Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae) from Lanao and Panay, Philippines,” published in the Baltic Journal of Coleopterology.
