DOrSU, DTI Launch MADE IN DAVLAB to Promote Innovation and Material Development

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have officially launched the Materials Development and Innovation in Davao Oriental Fabrication Laboratory (MADE IN DAVLAB): A Regenerative Path for Birthing Innovative Ideas under the Shared Service Facility (SSF) program today, March 5, at the University Research Complex (UResCom), Marfori, Don Enrique Lopez, City of Mati, Davao Oriental.
The project has been allocated a budget of P10 million through DTI-SSF. MADE IN DAVLAB will function as a center for innovation, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. It is specifically designed to assist Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), students, faculty members, researchers, innovators, and hobbyists. By providing access to advanced technologies, the facility seeks to connect academic knowledge with practical applications in various industries.
DTI Provincial Director Ma. Joycelyn F. Banlasan emphasized the significance of the project, calling it a “game-changer” for the province. “This project has been three years in the making. It is the first of its kind in the province and, if I am not mistaken, the first in the region. Through the Pentahelix approach, we will work together to ensure the success of this collaboration.” She also assured DTI that DOrSU will deliver the best outcomes for this initiative.
DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce highlighted the strong partnership between the university and DTI. “There is nothing better than a vision realized. DTI has always had a special connection with DOrSU,” he said. He also recalled the origins of the project, stating, “This project began with a vision from UResCom and Dr. Tayone. The concept of this FabLab revolves around materials and design, and our dream is for this laboratory to contribute to DOrSU’s aspiration of entering the QS World Rankings.”
The project is led by a team of experts who will oversee its development and implementation. The team members include Rod Ryan B. Mendoza, PhD; Ivan L. Saligumba, PhD; and Wilanfranco C. Tayone, RCh, PhD.
The primary objectives of the project include establishing a safe and fully functional fabrication laboratory, supporting MSMEs in integrating innovative technologies into their businesses, and developing strategies to ensure easy access to advanced laboratory services. Additionally, the project aims to conduct training programs for target beneficiaries, faculty members, and students. It also seeks to build partnerships with industries to foster collaboration and sustainability. Moreover, the project team plans to propose initiatives that will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the FabLab.
DTI Regional Director Romeo L. Castanaga underscored the impact of MADE IN DAVLAB, stating, “With P10 million in funding from DTI, this project is unlocking limitless possibilities. Through collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and the media, we can achieve even greater milestones. This is why we embrace the Pentahelix approach.” He also expressed confidence in DOrSU’s leadership, adding, “I have full confidence in the visionary leadership of Dr. Ponce and the dedication of his team.”
The launch event was attended by representatives from DTI, members of the MSME sector, and officials from DOrSU. (DOrSU PIO)
