Davao Oriental State University’s Human Resource Development Services (HRDS), in collaboration with the Gender Research and Resource Center, held a Gender Sensitivity Training for newly hired employees on November 13, 2024, at the University Learning Information and Resource Center (ULIRC). The training, a key part of DOrSU’s onboarding process, underscores the university’s commitment to cultivating a workplace that values diversity and champions inclusivity.
DOrSU’s Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Person, Assistant Professor Jhonnel P. Villegas, led the session with an in-depth lecture on the fundamental concepts of gender and sexuality, emphasizing the importance of understanding these topics in both professional and community contexts. He discussed the different dimensions of gender beyond biological distinctions, exploring societal expectations, roles, and the impacts of gender bias. His lecture encouraged attendees to question traditional stereotypes and recognize the value of gender inclusivity in building a supportive work environment.
In his opening message, Mr. Angelito S. David, Head of HRDS, highlighted the significance of the training as part of the university’s onboarding process. He emphasized that this regular activity is integral to DOrSU’s strategy to maintain a healthy and respectful work culture. By equipping new hires with an understanding of gender sensitivity, the university aims to reduce workplace discrimination and enhance employee engagement through inclusivity and respect for individual differences.
The training featured an open forum, allowing approximately 40 participants to share their perspectives, ask questions, and gain insights from the experiences of others. Participants discussed real-world scenarios where gender sensitivity plays a critical role, with facilitators guiding them on how to apply gender-sensitive practices within the workplace.
This initiative aligns closely with DOrSU’s regenerative futures vision, which sees gender awareness as a cornerstone for inclusion and building a regenerative community. By instilling gender sensitivity as part of its foundational values, DOrSU empowers employees to actively contribute to a university culture rooted in respect, inclusivity, and equity.
