DOrSU Launches First-Ever Biodiversity Research Center in Region XI
Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) inaugurated today, May 7, its Biodiversity Research Center at Marfori, Don Enrique Lopez, City of Mati. The center is the first of its kind in the region, and will house three labs: Vertebrate Research Lab, Invertebrate Research Lab, and Tropical Genomics Lab. Its purpose is to promote innovative research on the region’s rich ecology, while addressing the critical issues of biodiversity loss and habitat degradation.
Dr. Roy G. Ponce, the President of DOrSU, emphasized the center’s role in advancing scientific knowledge and promoting sustainable practices in biodiversity management. He said, “With the launch of our Biodiversity Research Center, we are well-positioned to lead the charge in preserving Mindanao’s natural heritage for future generations.”
The inauguration ceremony was attended by distinguished guests from PENRO-DENR represented by Romel D. Oranda, PENRO – Province of Davao Oriental represented by Engineer Aimar Celibrado, MENRO – TARRAGONA represented by Mr. Mark Anthony Lawani, DOrSU chief administrative officers, faculty, staff, and students. They expressed optimism about the center’s potential to catalyze transformative change in the region’s biodiversity research, policy, and community engagement.
With a multidisciplinary team of researchers, the Biodiversity Research Center at DOrSU is poised to become a hub of excellence in ecological studies and environmental stewardship. Its establishment represents a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to encouraging a culture of scientific inquiry and environmental responsibility in Mindanao and beyond. (DOrSU PIO)
