The name of the first new species is from the Latin word βquadratusβ referring to its prominent square scaly markings in the pronotum and the elytra. The second species is named after the beetle research center of Daugavpils University in appreciation for the successful cooperation which led to the discovery of this new species.

Dr. Analyn A. Cabras, Mr. Jhonnel P. Villegas, and Dr. Milton Norman D. Medina described the said species in a paper titled “Two new species of Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae) from Lanao and Panay, Philippines,” published in the Baltic Journal of Coleopterology.
