DOrSU Research Director Joins Global Experts at UNESCO Forum on Ethics of AI in Bangkok
Dr. Lanie B. Laureano, Director for Research at Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU), represented the university and the Philippines at the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence held on June 24-27, 2025, at Centara Grand at CentralWorld, Bangkok.
Dr. Laureano presented her research titled “Licensure Examination Performance Prediction using EXplainable AI,” which was selected as one of only 40 abstracts accepted from more than 600 submissions worldwide.
Her study explores the use of Machine Learning and EXplainable AI to predict the performance of takers of the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT). The research aims to help identify students who may need academic support and guide curriculum enhancement based on the predicted outcomes.
“This was a meaningful and eye-opening experience,” Dr. Laureano shared. “I learned a lot about the innovations, practical applications, and challenges of using AI in different settings. Aside from my oral presentation, I also had the chance to share my work through a poster presentation, which led to engaging discussions and potential collaborations with participants from universities and institutions around the world.”
The forum brought together global leaders, AI experts, industry pioneers, and policymakers to discuss key issues surrounding the ethical development of artificial intelligence. One of the major highlights was the sharing of experiences on how various countries are implementing UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI.
Hosted by UNESCO and co-hosted by the Government of Thailand and the European Union, the forum served as a platform for exchanging ideas on responsible AI use and its impact on education, governance, and society at large.
DOrSU’s participation in this prestigious global event marks another milestone in its mission to contribute to cutting-edge, ethical research with real-world impact.
